Sohrai art is a beautiful tribal painting tradition of Jharkhand, created mainly by the Oraon, Munda, and other indigenous communities. It is closely associated with the Sohrai harvest festival, celebrated after the new crops are gathered. Women artists paint these murals on the mud walls of their homes using natural colors made from clay, rice paste, charcoal, and plant extracts.
The paintings usually feature animals, birds, trees, flowers, and symbolic motifs, reflecting themes of fertility, prosperity, and the deep bond between humans, nature, and livestock. The style is marked by bold outlines, rhythmic patterns, and earthy tones of red, white, black, and yellow.
More than decoration, Sohrai art is a ritual expression, performed to honor nature and celebrate agricultural cycles. Today, it stands as a proud symbol of Jharkhand’s tribal identity and is gaining recognition for its cultural and artistic value.
